West Jordan’s historic Sugar Factory Playhouse will come closer to being a mattress factory this summer as they proudly present the lively musical, “Once Upon A Mattress” June 15 – 26, 2006.
This popular retelling of the “Princess and the Pea” fairytale is full of great music, big laughs, delightful dance numbers, and just the right amount of romance to make sure that everything is “happily ever after.”
The Sugar Factory’s “Mattress” will transport the audience to a time of castles and kings as we meet a kingdom with a dilemma. No one can marry until Prince Dauntless finds a bride, and his all-too-loving Queen Mother refuses to deem any Princess worthy of her son. Enter the Princess Winifred who just refuses to give up and you have the right element to put chaos in the castle.
The cast for “Mattress” features many names and faces that will be very familiar to Utah theatre-goers including Marissa Young as the sensitive Princess Winifred. King Sextamus will be played by Merrill Dodge and Ryan Poole is the ever brave and wildly confident Prince Harry. Making their first appearances at the Sugar Factory are Corey Brandenburger as Prince Dauntless, Kate Brenchley as his overpowering mother, Queen Agravaine, Natalie Easter as Lady Larkin, and Steve Harmon as the Wizard. Returning to the playhouse, A.J. Longhurst plays the Minstrel, while Riley Groves portrays the Court Jester.
The cast is rounded out by several West Jordan residents making this a true community event. “Once Upon A Mattress” is directed by Michelle Groves with her husband, Vic, acting as Musical Director. Costumes are by Diana Osborne and sets by Dave Newton.
The show will run June 15, 16, 17, 19, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 26, 2006 beginning at 7:30 pm. Saturday matinees on June 17 and 24 will begin at 2:00 pm. Tickets are $6 for adults and $3 for children 12 and younger. Anyone 12 and under dressed as a prince or princess at either matinee performance will be admitted free when accompanied by an adult.
Tickets can be purchased at Macey’s on 7800 South and 3200 West in West Jordan or at the door the night of the performance.
