A Journey Into the Woods…

Once upon a rehearsal, a courageous company of young performers stepped into the tangled, twisting world of Into the Woods… and we are now halfway through our musical adventure!

That’s right — the Baker and his Wife are questing, Cinderella is dreaming, Jack is climbing, Little Red is wandering (carefully, we hope!), the Princes are dramatically lamenting, and the Witch is watching it all unfold.

And oh… the music.

If you’ve ever journeyed through Sondheim’s forest, you know this score is no simple fairy tale tune. The rhythms twist like briars, the lyrics tumble faster than magic beans, and the harmonies stack higher than Jack’s beanstalk. It is TOUGH. But our brave cast has accepted the challenge with determination and grit.

Thankfully, we have our own musical fairy godmother — Megan, our incredible Music Director. With patience, precision, and a bit of rehearsal-room magic, she’s guiding our cast through the intricate layers of this score. The opening number is beginning to sparkle as voices weave together in that iconic overlapping storytelling — wishes flying through the air like enchanted sparks. And the soaring finale is slowly coming to life, reminding us all that stories don’t end with “happily ever after”… they grow, they change, and they bring us together.

Every rehearsal, the sound grows richer. The confidence grows stronger. The forest feels fuller.

Meanwhile, in a closet not so far away, another kind of magic is happening.

Our brilliant costumer, Brook, is transforming fabric and thread into pure storybook wonder. Flowing ball gowns worthy of royal festivals. A perfectly practical (but still charming) Baker’s ensemble. A bold red cloak ready to venture off the path. Regal capes for those ever-dramatic Princes. Quaint, cute, and colorful costumes for every cast member! Perhaps even a certain Witch’s look that balances power, mystery, and just a touch of glamour.

Beautiful. Magical. Mystical.

But Into the Woods is more than just stunning costumes and challenging music. Just like the characters they portray, our performers are learning valuable lessons along the way.

They’re discovering courage like Cinderella stepping forward. Ambition like Jack chasing the sky. Determination like the Baker refusing to give up. Resilience like the Witch protecting what she loves. And teamwork — because in this story, no one’s journey happens alone.

Halfway through rehearsals, the woods are no longer unfamiliar. There are still giants to face, spells to break, and wishes to untangle. But this cast is ready. They are brave. They are committed. And they are building something truly special.
