Event Description
West Jordan Symphony presents an evening tracing the evolution of symphonic power in Generations: A Masterworks Performance.
This Beethoven-centered program explores a remarkable musical lineage spanning the Classical and early Romantic eras. The evening opens with Johann Nepomuk Hummel’s Premiere Overture, Op. 101, a brilliant and energetic work that bridges Classical refinement with emerging Romantic intensity. A contemporary of Beethoven and a student of Mozart, Hummel represents the vibrant transitional voice of his era.
Joseph Haydn’s Cello Concerto No. 1 in C Major follows, showcasing the elegance, clarity, and expressive vitality that shaped an entire generation of composers. Haydn, a mentor to Beethoven, stands as one of the foundational architects of the symphonic tradition. This radiant concerto features Tamra Baca, cellist, member of West Jordan Symphony and Sky Island Quartet. Her artistry brings warmth and virtuosity to this celebrated work of the Classical repertoire.
The evening concludes with Ludwig van Beethoven’s iconic Symphony No. 5 in C Minor, Op. 67, one of the most recognized and transformative works in orchestral history. From its dramatic opening motif to its triumphant C Major conclusion, the symphony embodies struggle, resilience, and ultimate victory. Beethoven expanded the emotional and structural possibilities of the symphony and forever altered its course.
Together, these works illuminate a powerful generational arc, from Haydn’s structural brilliance, through Hummel’s refinement, to Beethoven’s revolutionary force.
Join us at the Canyon View Credit Union Community & Arts Center for this luminous masterworks performance.
